The Barber pitfall trap is a simple ground trap to catch epigeal animals crawling on the soil surface.

The system consists of a collecting funnel with detachable collecting bottle, a plastic hollow cylinder (used as guideway) and a transparent lid to protect it against rain. The collecting bottle can be quickly and easily replaced.

The arthropods emerging from the soil in spring and summer are quantitatively captured in soil photoelectors; the evaluation can be carried out both in terms of their density (number of individuals per unit area) and - for life cycle questions - in terms of their temporal occurrence (phenologically).
