Question of the project
What is the status of the vine regarding water supply and how does irrigation affect the yield and quality?
Water - the "Blue Gold “ (Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture)
In addition to the installatoin of water reservoirs for drip irrigation, Dr. Daniel Heßdörfer from the Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture is using state-of-the-art technology: To measure the soil water potential pF-Meter and Tensiomark sensors are used. In addition, drones are deployed to determine the drought stress via infrared thermometry and Scholander bombs to determine the water potential of the plants.
The aim of the complex investigations is a targeted and efficient irrigation of the vine plant:"The creed for us is to supply the vineyard with water only when the plant - not the vintner - suffers from drought stress," says Dr. Heßdörfer.
The analysis of the measurements showed good agreements between the measured soil water tensions (measured with pF-meter/ Tensiomarks) and the water potential of the vine plants (results will be published shortly).
